A destitute artist, sex worker, and radical feminist writer drops out of grad school in 1960s New York and drifts into the orbit of Andy Warhol's Factory as the author of the anti-male SCUM Manifesto. As her paranoia, brilliance, and rage compound, the story arcs toward the June 1968 attempted assassination that would briefly make her infamous, in a portrait of outsiderdom, ideology, the limits of the Factory, and rebellion without an outlet.

Plot Summary

I Shot Andy Warhol is a 1996 American-British biographical drama directed by Mary Harron in her feature directorial debut, with a screenplay by Harron and Daniel Minahan. The film stars Lili Taylor as Valerie Solanas, the radical feminist author of the SCUM Manifesto, who shot pop artist Andy Warhol (Jared Harris) at his Factory on June 3, 1968. The supporting cast includes Stephen Dorff as Candy Darling, Martha Plimpton, Michael Imperioli, Tahnee Welch, and Lothaire Bluteau. Cinematography is by Ellen Kuras, with a score by John Cale of the Velvet Underground, alongside covers of 1960s songs performed by 1990s indie acts, including R.E.M. and Wilco. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival and screened in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, with Taylor receiving a Special Mention there.
