Rupert Wyatt is a veteran British filmmaker who launched his feature film career as director/writer of the mid-length musical drama, Subterrain (2001), co-starring Jamie Harris, John Challis, and Michelle Gomez, with music by Michael Nyman (who also executive produced). Wyatt was director/co-writer of his debut feature-length movie, The Escapist (2008), starring Brian Cox, Joseph Fiennes, Liam Cunningham, Seu Jorge, Dominic Cooper, and Damian Lewis, launching at the Sundance Film Festival and given a limited release by Vertigo Films.
Wyatt directed his first studio franchise movie with the Planet of the Apes series reboot, Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), co-written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (who also were among the lead producers), starring James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, Tom Felton and Andy Serkis, produced and released by 20th Century Fox to a strong $482 million worldwide. Wyatt was director and music supervisor of the remake of Karel Reisz’s acclaimed 1974 crime drama, The Gambler (2014), based on Dostoevsky’s novel and written by William Monahan, with star/producer Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman, Brie Larson, Michael K. Williams and Jessica Lange, grossing a poor $30 million (based on estimated costs) for Paramount Pictures.
Rupert Wyatt was director/co-writer/producer of the sci-fi thriller, Captive State (2019), co-written by Erica Beeney, starring John Goodman, Ashton Sanders, Jonathan Majors, Colson Baker, and Vera Farmiga, produced by Participant Media/Lightfuse & Gettaway, and released to a poor $8.8 million return (based on estimated costs) by Focus Features. Wyatt returned to feature filmmaking after a six-year absence as director/co-writer/executive producer of the desert drama set in the 7th Century, Desert Warrior (2025), co-written by Beeney and David Self (who also wrote the story), produced by Jeremy Bolt, and which starred Anthony Mackie, Aiysha Hart, Sharlto Copley and Ben Kingsley and was released wide by Vertical.
Rupert Wyatt was born and raised in Guildford, Surrey, England by his parents. Wyatt attended and graduated from Winchester College in Winchester, England, and then attended and graduated from Dragon School at Oxford University. Wyatt has been married to Erica Beeney since 2016; the couple has three children and lives in both Los Angeles and Hudson, New York. Wyatt’s height is 5’ 10”.
